- Electromagnetic Induction(EM):
EM uses a spectrum of audio and radio frequencies. EM is the most widely used method for locating metallic pipes, wires and cable. A specific transmitted frequency is applied either directly or indirectly to a target. A receiver detects the transmitted signal along the path of the target.
Passive Signal detection is another method for identifying pipes and cables carrying naturally occurring magnetic fields such as 50/60Hz and VLF signal. EM is commonly used and considered accurate in determining horizontal location of buried lines. - Ground Penetrating Radar(GPR):
GPR also known as Surface Penetrating Radar is a non-destructive imaging technology and is standard in utility locating due to its ability to resolve nonmetallic objects such as PVC, asbestos concrete, poly pipes, etc. Lower frequencies achieve greater depths at the sacrifice of very clear images. Higher frequencies achieve higher resolution images at the sacrifice of depth(see Concrete Imaging Radar(CIGPR)). GPR is also useful in identifying large buried structures, foundations, debris fields and ground disturbances. - Vacuum Excavation(air)
A combination of compressed air (or water) and high-pressure vacuum are used to expose the desired utility/object. This non-destructive method allows for confirmation of target location and other details such as: depth, size, material type and condition. At the surface, a typical excavation is no more than 10inx10in. All of the excavated material is placed back and compacted in the hole. Full restoration of hard surface materials include asphalt, concrete. - Concrete Imaging Radar
Concrete Imaging Ground Penetrating Radar (CIGPR) is a high frequency surface penetrating radar. High frequency radar reveals greater resolution detail but lacks deep penetration. Depending on the frequency, CIGPR can achieve depths within concrete of up to 9-12″ under ideal conditions. This imaging technology can be used to scan concrete prior to saw-cutting or core-drilling for damage avoidance.
For forensic purposes, CIGPR can detect air voids within or beneath concrete. This technology has replaced construction X-ray in many applications. - Line Fault Locating
We select the appropriate method of detection for each situation. Finding the fault so it can be repaired vs. replacing an entire line will save you tons of time and money. - UST Investigation
Mainly used by Environmental Engineering Firms, Verifying the existence of UST’s (or lack there of) is accomplished with two main technologies, Magnetic and GPR.
A site can be scanned for large metallic anomalies with the magnetic approach (for metallic tanks), then followed up with GPR Imaging for verification. Metallic UST’s will generate a distinctive image profile.
The GPR Imaging approach can also delineate where an excavation has occurred and dissimilar non-native soils have been backfilled. This type of investigation is typical for Phase 2 Envrionmental Site Assessments and assists with Tank Closure Assessment Reports(TCAR).
